A NORTH-EAST woman remains in hospital following an avalanche which claimed the lives of four climbers.

The 24-year-old woman from the Durham area, who has not been named, suffered severe head injuries in the incident in Glencoe, in the Scottish Highlands, on Saturday.

Today, she remains in Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital. However, a spokeswoman confirmed her condition had improved from critical to serious but stable.

Four of the six-strong party died when a sheet of snow collapsed on their descent of Bidean Nam Bian.

They were: Rachel Majumdar, a trainee doctor at Harrogate, her partner Tom Chesters, Newcastle University graduate Una Finnegan and PhD student Christopher Bell.

Another man survived.
