A FUNDRAISING event to buy an adapted car seat and pushchair for a sick youngster will be held this weekend (Sunday, December 13).

Alana Beth Dixon, who celebrates her first birthday tomorrow (Thursday, December 10), has a string of medical problems, which means her development has been delayed and she must be fed through a syringe.

Her mother, Claire Dixon, of Ushaw Moor, near Durham City, had a normal pregnancy but at birth it was noticed Alana Beth had a protruding tongue.

The new-born became severely jaundiced and medics finally diagnosed a hole in her heart.

The tot has a rare chromosome disorder, 22q11.2 duplication syndrome. She is registered blind and has low muscle tone around her mouth, enlarged kidneys, bowel and bladder problems and nerve issues.

It is thought she may also suffer from seizures and is being monitored.

She has spent much of the first year of her young life in and out of hospital appointments.

None of the valves to her heart close fully and she is due to see a cardiologist in January.

Her development has been delayed, even with months of physiotherapy, so that she cannot yet sit up or walk.

Hence, as she grows, she will need a specially adapted car seat and pushchair.

The car seat will cost £700 to £1,000 and the pushchair will cost around £1,300.

Without either, Alana Beth, and as a result her mother, would be virtually housebound.

The equipment will only be provided by the state when Alana Beth reaches the age of three.

A fundraising afternoon will be held at St Luke’s Church in Ushaw Moor, where Alana Beth was christened, on Sunday (December 13) from 1pm to 3pm.

There will be stalls, a raffle, tombola and the chance for children to meet Santa Claus. Gifts from Santa Claus will be available, priced £1 each.

Mrs Dixon, a 32-year-old part-time nurse who also has a son Aidan, four, said: “She’s not really aware (of her medical issues). She’s a smiler. Nothing seems to bother her.”

Further fundraising events will be announced in due course and donations to support Alana Beth can also be made via crowdfunding.justgiving.com/claire-dixon-4
